Exponential Change and Radical Abundance: a civilisation at the inflection point
For most of human history, change was slow. A person born in 1500 could expect that, when they grew old, the world would look much like the one they had been born into: same tools, same energy sources, same average lifespan, same fundamental possibilities. That is no longer true. The world a child born today will inhabit at the age of forty is essentially unimaginable from where we stand now — and the world they will inhabit at sixty, even more so. We are living through the steepest part of an exponential curve, and most political, social, and personal frameworks are still calibrated for the slow-change world that no longer exists.
The pattern is clear across multiple technologies. The cost of computing has fallen by a factor of roughly one billion since the 1960s — Moore’s Law in action for sixty years. The cost of human genome sequencing fell from 100 million dollars in 2001 to under 200 dollars today. The cost of solar electricity has dropped 90 % in the last fifteen years, making it cheaper than fossil fuels in most of the world. Artificial intelligence capabilities are doubling roughly every six months. Each of these curves, taken alone, is remarkable. Their convergence — AI, biotechnology, robotics, nanotechnology, clean energy, advanced materials — is producing the most consequential technological transition in human history.
The transhumanist movement has been thinking about exponential change for decades, often more clearly than mainstream institutions. Ray Kurzweil’s framework of the “Law of Accelerating Returns”, Peter Diamandis’s argument for “radical abundance”, Eric Drexler’s anticipation of advanced manufacturing — these were once fringe ideas dismissed as science fiction. Today they describe processes already in motion. The convergence of these technologies has the potential to dramatically reduce material scarcity, drastically lower the cost of energy, food, healthcare and information access, and free humanity from the constraints that have shaped every previous civilisation. The same convergence also creates serious risks — concentration of power, displacement of labour, environmental disruption, weapons proliferation, and the possibility of misaligned advanced AI — that must be navigated wisely.
