Biotechnology and Longevity: extending the healthy human lifespan

The greatest source of human suffering is not war, poverty, or natural disaster — it is biological ageing. Roughly 100,000 people die every day worldwide, and around two thirds of those deaths are caused by age-related conditions: cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and the cumulative breakdown of cellular and tissue function that we call “growing old”. Behind the statistics lies an immense reservoir of preventable suffering: the loss of capabilities, the slow disappearance of loved ones, the grief of those who survive them. The transhumanist movement has, from its origins, identified this as one of the most urgent problems any civilisation can confront.

For most of history, ageing was considered an immutable fact of nature, much as infectious disease was once considered the inevitable price of being alive. That view is changing fast. Ageing is now understood as a set of biological processes that can in principle be studied, slowed, and eventually reversed. The “Hallmarks of Ageing” framework — published in 2013 by López-Otín and colleagues, and updated in 2023 — identifies a dozen interconnected mechanisms (genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, cellular senescence, mitochondrial dysfunction, stem-cell exhaustion, altered intercellular communication, and others) that together drive the ageing process. Each one is an active area of research, and several are already being targeted by experimental therapies entering clinical trials.

Beyond ageing, biotechnology more broadly is transforming what is possible in medicine: mRNA vaccines developed in record time during the COVID-19 pandemic, CRISPR-based gene editing approved as a cure for sickle-cell disease in 2023, immunotherapies turning previously terminal cancers into manageable conditions, organoid models for personalised drug screening, and AI-driven drug discovery compressing development timelines that previously took decades. Cryopreservation — covered in its own section — extends this logic to its limit: preserving the structural information of the brain when current medicine has nothing else to offer.

Alianza Futurista advocates for massive public and private investment in longevity research, regulatory frameworks that allow promising therapies to reach patients faster while maintaining safety, and a serious societal conversation about what we want medicine to achieve. Defeating ageing is not a luxury for the wealthy of the future — it is the most consequential project our species can undertake, and the foundation on which every other transhumanist goal depends.
